Voltaire’s Candide was influenced by various atrocities of the mid-18th century, most notably the devastating Lisbon earthquake of 1755, the Voltaire was not a philosopher in the strict sense of the term, though he put across new ideas and thoughts prolifically through his varied style of writing.
